Readers Response Journals: These are used to get the students practice writing answers to comprehension based questions. Due to continual math and reading testing I may not be able to go over every child's answers every day.
LETTERLAND: Unit 1 List A Students will have spelling homework each week. To make things easier, the assignment will be the same week to week, but the words will change! Students will be learning the skills needed to spell words from specific families each week. They will also be learning "Tricky" and "Story" words, that do not necessarily follow the weekly word families. The spelling sheet that is sent home on Day 1 with the students' circled words needs to stay in their homework folders during the week due to the fact they will need them to do the rest of the week's homework! Day 1: Students need to read their circled words two times. Parents, please sign. Day 2: Students will practice writing words from their circled spelling list. They will use the Look-Say-Cover-Write homework page. They will do the following: 1. Look at the word and say it. 2. Cover up the word and write it. 3. Check to see if they wrote the word correctly. 4. Then cover up the word and write it again.
If students make mistakes while writing their words that is totally fine! We all make mistakes and mistakes are a part of the learning process. If students make a mistake they can simply cross out the word they wrote and try it again on the back of the paper.
Day 3: Students will write 5 sentences. Students need to use at least one of their spelling words in each sentence (can be a family, tricky, or story words). When students are writing their sentences encourage them to use detail. Ask them if that sentence would be interesting for the reader to read. Also, if students spell the words in their sentences that are not spelling words incorrectly that is fine! Encourage students to sound out words. They can use their "arm roller coaster" or their "rubber band" to sound out the words. We want to teach our students how to hear the sounds in words and not to just memorize how to spell them.
Day 4: Give your student a practice spelling test. Include all the circled words on their list. If they miss any words practice those specific words for the spelling test on day 5.
